How to Measure Your Head for a Wig

The right cap size is what makes a wig comfortable enough to forget you're wearing it. Too tight and it can pinch or give you a headache; too loose and it can shift. Measuring takes about two minutes, and all you need is a soft tape measure and a mirror.

Before you start

  • Use a soft, flexible tape measure (the kind used for sewing).
  • If you have hair, flatten it as much as you can, or wear a wig cap if you usually wear one under your wig.
  • Keep the tape snug but not tight.
  • Measure twice to be sure.

Step 1: Circumference

Start at the front of your hairline, in the middle of your forehead. Run the tape around the side of your head just above your ear, around the back at the nape of your neck, above the other ear and back to where you started. This is the most important measurement for choosing your cap size.

Step 2: Front to nape

Measure from the front of your hairline, straight back over the top of your head, to the nape of your neck where your hair ends.

Step 3: Ear to ear over the top

Measure from the top of one ear, over the top of your head, to the top of the other ear.

Between sizes?

Our Signature Mongolian and Classic European wigs have clips at the ears and adjustable straps at the nape, so you can fine-tune the fit. If you're between sizes, the circumference is the best guide.

You can also try before you buy. Our Cap Sizing Kit is a two-week rental: try the caps at home, then return the kit within two weeks for a partial refund or full store credit.
